What do you when you are suddenly wide awake at 4:30am, you toss and turn and telling your self to go back to sleep but nothing happens? Do you read a book? Do you go on social media? Do you pray? Do you turn on the TV? Do you workout?
The whole of this week, I’ve been waking up between 4am – 5am and can’t go back to sleep.
Day 1: Monday: Woke up at 4:35am, tried to force myself to go back to sleep, nothing, so I went on Facebook, Instagram, checked the stats on my blog, checked my WhatsApp messages hoping to find a message that would send me right back to sleep but nothing :-(. Kept switching from one to page to another until 6am. I got out of bed decided to have ‘breakfast’ with Shaun T before going to work, I put my favourite workout video on, Focus T25 by the man himself and I did Core Cardio. I wasn’t in top form but it felt great to sweat out whatever was stealing my joy!
Day 2: Tuesday: My eyes opened at exactly 4am, tossed and turned again, no sleep came to my eyes. I lay in bed for a while thinking about the thing that has been robbed me of sleep. Then I remembered that one of my resolutions this year is set time for prayer and reflection, so I decided to set my alarm clock to 5:30am every morning in place of the usual 6am and have my quiet time then and that’s what I’ve been doing since then.
Day 3:Wednesday: My day again start early, at 4:45am to be precise. This time I didn’t even bother to toss or turn. I turned my side lamp on, said a short ‘thank you for making it through the night prayer’, read my bible, committed the day ahead of me to the Lord in prayer, then did my 30 minute workout, showered and got ready for work.
Day 4 :Thursday: I woke up at 5am (progress lol) and did same as Day 3. I’ve decided not to go on social media before I talk to God and I pray I stick to my reflection time for the rest of my life. It just feels great to know that my day and what lies ahead of me has been covered by the Lord, so I can step in the world knowing He has my back.
Next time you have a restless night, try saying a little prayer, listening to soft music, read the bible or a book, or meditate instead of going on social media, or your computer or watch television. Do something calming and relaxing that will help you go back to sleep not anything that.
I’ve prayed over the issue that has been keeping me up and I am confident It’s handled by my God and I claim my sleep in His name!
In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, oh Lord will keep me safe! Psalm 4:8
